Red Cross shelter in Assumption Parish
ASSUMPTION- Severe weather across the Baton Rouge area left many houses in Assumption Parish without power. Due to the extensive power outages, Red Cross opened a shelter at the Belle Rose Middle School last night.
Governor Jindal has declared a state of emergency for Assumption Parish, with the biggest concern being the lack of power. The downed power lines left about 6,800 houses without power this morning.
Only one family actually stayed in the shelter last night, but Red Cross assisted other families that were inconvenienced by yesterday's storm. According to Sheriff Mike Waguespack, energy personnel are saying the power might not be restored everywhere until Thursday.
The Red Cross shelter is expected to close this morning at 8 a.m.
"Probably over half the parish is without power right now, that's our biggest problem," said Waguespack. "Other than that it's picking up the debris. There's going to be a lot of debris removal that the parish is going to have to take care of.
Napoleonville was hit especially hard by yesterday's storm. Trees and branches litter the city's streets making it hard to travel. Officials in Assumption hope that power will be restored throughout the parish by noon on Thursday.
All schools in Assumption Parish have been cancelled for Tuesday.
