BATON ROUGE - A trusty from Rayne City Jail is back in jail after a police chase in Baton Rouge last night.
Department of Corrections inmate John J. Smith, 42, is accused of stealing a City of Rayne pickup truck and fleeing to Baton Rouge.
Baton Rouge Police Sgt. Don Kelly says around 8 p.m. Wednesday uniformed patrol officers spotted the truck leaving the Alamo Plaza hotel on Florida Blvd. and attempted to stop it.
The suspect fled, initiating a pursuit, which ended at North Lobdell and Choctaw when the suspect crashed into a civilian vehicle.
The suspect then fled from the crash scene on foot. A K-9 unit quickly tracked the man down.
BRPD says during transit to Earl K. Long for treatment for a dog bite Smith began violently beating his own head against the prisoner screen, causing injuries to himself.
Smith is charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle, flight from an officer, resisting an officer and hit and run charges.
