ALEXANDRIA- More than 20 school buses in the Rapides Parish School District are older than the students they carry.
Twenty-four of the local school district's fleet are from 1998 - most purchased used in 2003 - and are the oldest of those used for daily routes.
Rapides' Director of Transportation Velt Edwards said he surveyed the 13 surrounding parishes and found his parish has the oldest fleet by far.
Edwards said the national average a bus should stay on the road is 12 to 16 years.
Director of Finance Liz Domite said the school system has received $3.5 million in certificates of indebtedness. In January, she will ask board members for permission to seek bids to buy newer buses.
