ADDIS - Railroad crews spent Wednesday repairing damage after a train derailment in West Baton Rouge Parish.

The derailment happened around 4 p.m. Tuesday near Peter Messina Road and caused 35 households to evacuate the area. Union Pacific Railroad is investigating the derailment of the six rail cars.

Union Pacific spokesman Jeff DeGraff says two were empty and three others contained flammable chemicals. He says trains rolling through West Baton Rouge Parish can carry anything from dry goods like wheat and flour to building materials and hazardous chemicals.

"We are working hard to prevent any type of derailment, but we understand there are some things that happen at times that are out of our control," he said. "Things that are in our control, we are working to mitigate that."

DeGraff says Union Pacific will now pull data from the train itself, speak with the train's conductor and inspect the section of track and the wheels of the cars. It may take a few weeks before Union Pacific determines the cause of the derailment.
