BAYOU CORNE - Officials in Bayou Corne voiced rising concerns today about a protection levee around the nearby sinkhole that's sunk four feet since October.

Salt water and other contaminants in the sinkhole are inches away from seeping into the freshwater bayous nearby.

Assumption Parish officials fear the break in the berm could cause major environmental damage in the area, leaving them on high alert.

"It causes environmental risk for vegetation, trees, possibly fish and so forth. And that's what the containment is for, to keep the material in the sinkhole from getting out," said John Boudreaux.

A spokesperson for Texas Brine, the company who leased the land the sinkhole appeared on, says crews will begin repairing the levee Wednesday. There are also plans in the works to extend the berm to keep it from sinking more.
