DONALDSONVILLE - Some residents are concerned a proposed industrial park may be too close to a school. However, Ascension Parish leaders say the school is outside any danger zone.

The industrial park is proposed near Lowery Middle and Elementary Schools. Part of the park would be zoned for heavy industry. The property lines for the school and the heavy industrial zone are 1000 feet apart, just greater than the distance of three football fields.

Parish leaders say the distance between the school and the industrial zone is nearly twice the distance for what's normally considered safe, a distance of 660 feet. They also point out that other schools in the parish are already near heavy industry.

A spokeswoman for the school district says it is not opposed to the proposed project.

"At this point we're providing information to the planning and zoning committee," said Jackie Tisdell with Ascension Parish Schools, "making sure they understand the proximity of our schools to the rezoned areas, and that they take into concern the proper buffer zones for the different kinds of industry they might attract to that area."
