Preventing child abuse one pinwheel at a time
BATON ROUGE - Prevent Child Abuse Louisiana has been dedicated to preventing abuse and neglect of children in Louisiana since 1986. Helping them uphold their mission is as easy as using social media.
PCAL has plenty of events on their calendar. April is Child Abuse Prevention Month.
"Our national symbol for child abuse prevention is...the blue, spinning pinwheel," Executive Director Amanda Brunson told News 2's Kylie Dixon. "We've received a grant from the Pennington Family Foundation to do 15 school-based pinwheel gardens in Baton Rouge."
The grant will allow more than a dozen schools to have 500 of the pinwheels planted in their front yard. It would also allow PCAL to give parents of students at those schools important abuse and family information.
"It's all about connecting families to resources and making sure they have everything they need so that they can care for their kids appropriately," Brunson explains.
Kappa Delta Sorority is one of Prevent Child Abuse Louisiana's biggest supporters. The Epsilon Chapter at LSU raised over $70,000 last year alone.
"That money...funds a parent help-line where parents can get help 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week," Brunson says. "It (also) supports parenting education workshops and child abuse prevention programs."
One of those fundraising opportunities is the upcoming St. Patrick's' Day Parade.
"We sell jambalaya at the St. Patricks' Day Parade," Kappa Delta sister Maggie Agosta said on 2une In. "Every Kappa Delta member has to sell five, and there's a lot of us, so it's really easy to get tickets."
You can also purchase tickets at one of the sorority's four stands along the parade route.
PCAL also has several upcoming events of their own, including a Child Prevention Awareness Month Kick-Off Luncheon Wednesday, April 1st at the Renaissance Hotel in Baton Rouge. Visit the Prevent Child Abuse Louisiana website for more information.
