President Obama has decided to send 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan, 10,000 less than the U.S. Commander in Afghanistan recommended. He's asking NATO to send the additional 10,000.
They are to be deployed over six months. The new troop surge will bring the total in Afghanistan to more than 100,000.
Mr. Obama will make a speech tonight at West Point, where he will lay out a new plan to try to stabilize the country. The strategy is expected to transition American forces out of the nation. Before that speech, he's expected to meet with Congressional leaders.
