"Predictions and Reality..."
Prognosticators offer the amount of activity during a hurricane season; correlating the predictions is questionable. In 1983 there only four named storms but Alicia nailed the Houston-Galveston coast with extensive damage. There were six named storms in 1992 but Andrew created extensive damage to Baton Rouge and before Gustav it was the worst storm to hit our area. Last year the Klotzbach-Gray team predicted ten named storms when 19 were recorded. They forecasted four hurricanes when ten were logged with some accuracy with expectations that two major hurricanes would develop when only one occurred. The predictions for this season jumped to 18 named storms, nine hurricanes and four major hurricanes. It only takes one storm. Our special, "Weathering the Storm" airs tonight on WBRZ at 7:00 PM.
