On May 24, 2012, a week before the official start, Alberto became the first named storm of the season. In early May, 2007, and similar to the formation of Alberto, Tropical Storm Andrea formed on the Carolina coast. Since 1779 there have been 43 storms before June 1st and another series of unnamed storms developed during May in 1973, 1974 and 1976. Another hurricane factoid includes comparisons with "I" storms including Hurricanes Isabel in 2003, Ike, five years ago, Irene in 2011 and Isaac, just last year. None of these storms were major hurricanes at landfall but generated deadly storm surges. The designation of the Hurricane Season from June 1st through the end of November is based upon the majority of storm activity occurring during those six months.
