NEW ROADS - A school bus driver and his aid have been suspended after a 5-year-old boy was left on a Pointe Coupee Parish school bus for hours Monday.

Sebastian Stevens Jr. fell asleep on his morning ride to Rosenwall Elementary. The driver finished delivering all the kids but Stevens to school, went home and parked the bus, and went to a dentist appointment, leaving Stevens sleeping on the bus.

"It's 11:15 and my child's been on the bus since 7 o'clock this morning," Karen Stevens said.

She and her husband, Sebastian Stevens Sr., were told the driver, Roger Dixon, and his aid did not scan the bus like they were suppose to.

The driver went home, left Sebastian on the bus asleep and then went to his dentist appointment.

"My child could be dead right now," Karen said.

"I had to put my hood on," Sebastian Jr. said, because he got cold.

He told his parents he screamed for help but no one heard him. He then pushed his way out of the door and walked nearly a quarter of a mile before someone spotted him.

"[It makes] me feel that my child is nobody, like we are nobody," Sebastian Sr. said.

A good Samaritan scooped Sebastian up and brought him back to the driver's house. The driver then took Sebastian to school in his personal vehicle.

The school's principal, Monica Fabre, notified his parents and recommended Dixon be terminated.

Dixon did not want to be interviewed on TV, but said he was distraught by the situation and apologized to the parents.

Pointe Coupee School Superintendent Linda D'amico said the district is not taking the incident lightly and expects more disciplinary action to come.
