Ascension Parish Sheriff’s detectives are investigating a shooting that happened early Wednesday morning in Prairieville.

Johnny Stokes, Jr. was shot three times around 1:00 a.m. as he was entering his home on Darville Road. Stokes was hit in his leg and torso. A third bullet grazed his head. Stokes was transported to a local hospital where he remains in critical condition.

Stokes’ girlfriend told detectives that he had left “to go to the store.” She heard him driving up to their home shortly after and told her to unlock the door. She said she heard gunshots as she was walking to the door. She found Stokes shot and lying on the ground when she opened the door.

Stokes told detectives at the hospital that he had been gambling earlier that day. He heard someone yell to him when he returned home and then shots were fired. Stokes said the shooter robbed him of about $2,000 and fled.
