BATON ROUGE - Ascension Parish deputies arrested a man after he allegedly stole a vehicle with an infant still inside.

Sheriff Jeff Wiley said 24 year-old Juan Carlos Funez-Matute was charged with Auto Theft and Simple Kidnapping.

Deputies responded to a call from the Popingo on the corner of US 61 and LA 427 for a report of a vehicle stolen with a one-year-old child still inside.

The driver of the vehicle went into the store and left his car running with the child sleeping in the back seat. While the driver was inside Funez-Matute jumped into the car and fled towards Baton Rouge.

Deputies said after Funez-Matute realized there was a child in the car he returned to the store and tried to flee on foot. Witnesses near the location assisted in detaining Funez-Matute until deputies arrived.
