NEW ORLEANS - Seafood industry leaders are assessing the effects of Hurricane Isaac.

Ewell Smith, director of the state's seafood promotion board, says fishing communities such as Delacroix, Hopedale and Lafitte suffered damage in the storm.

Smith said figures on how the storm affected the industry were being compiled Friday.

A small area off a section of coast between Port Fourchon and Caminada Pass remains closed to commercial fishing after weathered oil from the 2010 BP oil spill washed ashore. Smith said the industry supports the state's closure as part of an ongoing policy to ensure that all seafood on the market is safe to eat.

The state-backed board of industry members Friday was discussing whether to sign an agreement with the New Orleans Saints to promote Louisiana seafood.
