PORT ALLEN- Port Allen Mayor Derek Lewis resigned this morning shortly before pleading guilty to federal racketeering charges in Baton Rouge.
Lewis called a staff meeting this morning to announce his resignation. Sources tell News 2 he cleaned out his desk in the middle of the night Monday.
News 2 cameras caught Lewis as he was coming out of his office, and he admitted to reporter Stephanie Ryan that he did "illegal things", and took items from undercover FBI agents.
Lewis was one of the people indicted as part of "Operation: Blighted Officials", an FBI sting operation where agents posing as businessmen asked for bribes and favors help land a fake garbage can-cleaning business.
Lewis pleaded guilty today to racketeering charges in exchange for prosecutors dropping all additional charges against him. He also said in court he would help prosecutors in their cases against the remaining people indicted in this investigation.
News 2's Stephanie Ryan will have the latest information
