Port Allen mayor slashes salaries for some, except herself
PORT ALLEN - Few fireworks at the Port Allen City Council meeting Wednesday; and some say little business was done, too.
Most were waiting for the introduction of the 2013-2014 city budget, due to start in July. But while Mayor Deedy Slaughter pulled the budget out of an envelope and passed out a paper copy to council members, a motion to formally introduce the budget was not made.
"There was no motion," said CFO Audrey McCain. "And no second to introduce the budget. There was no vote to introduce the budget."
McCain says this puts the timely passage of the budget in jeopardy, because the fiscal year begins July 1st.
"The local government act requires fifteen days for the public to view the document, to look at it; to copy it," said McCain.
If you look at the budget closely, other items raise eyebrows. The mayor's salary stays at a controversial $85,000. The salary of the CFO decreased from $73,000 to $33,000. The CAO's salary dropped from $65,000 to $44,000.
The mayor said it's not about black and white numbers.
"I begin to reach out to three white council members they made it known that I will not agree with everything that you do," said Slaughter.
She believes it is other black and white issues, that is keeping Port Allen from getting things accomplished.
