Darryl Pierre, 21, is finally behind bars after a 24-hour run from police. He originally was arrested for pandering, but escaped police custody while being transported to Parish Prison.
"We couldn't have made this arrest without the community, all the support and calls and the tips," said Chief of Police Fred Smith.
Pierre was found holed up in a utility closet on Maryland Avenue. Homeowners were unaware of his presence.
"I could tell the dude was young, that was so stupid what he did," said Larry Jackson, who unknowingly slept just feet away from Pierre, "He could have been burning up in there, that's the hot heater room."
Now Chief Smith says he will review transport procedures to ensure this doesn't happen again.
"The safety of the public, the safety of the community is our number one priority, and if someone escapes from police custody or whatever, we definitely want to get that guy back in custody as soon as possible," said Chief Smith.
