Port Allen CFO reinstated
PORT ALLEN - Chief Financial Officer Audrey McCain is back on the job after Mayor "Deedy" Slaughter fired her on Monday.
Slaughter said McCain needed to be fired after clerical errors turned up on the city's financial audit.
"I asked the auditor, I said, did this happen on last year, did we have the same findings, he said yes, so immediately I knew that something had to be done," said Slaughter.
But McCain was only CFO for a portion of the audit, and city council members said she was hired to fix problems left by her predecessor.
"There's no other way to put it, the books were in shambles, we had to hire an accounting firm to help him do the books, help him try to clean things up, and when Ms. McCain was hired for the position, assumed the position, it takes a while to clean that stuff up and she was well on her way," said Hugh Riviere, a council member in Port Allen.
"It took me a long time to gather all the problems, find them first, and fix them," said McCain, with her lawyer outside City Hall, just minutes after she was reinstated.
Now Slaughter wants to hire her brother-in-law to do McCain's job, despite calling the hire an ethical grey area.
"I want to do everything in my might, to make sure that the city of Port Allen, run smoothly and run forward, and I'm just asking the citizens to bear with me and give me that opportunity," said Slaughter.
