Port Allen CFO and auditor say mayor owes the city
PORT ALLEN - Documents News 2 obtained show Chief Financial Officer Audrey McCain and the city's auditor agree Mayor Deedy Slaughter owes the city some money back.
It comes after she took a taxpayer-funded trip to Washington D.C. this year to attend the president's inauguration. Documents News 2 obtained show McCain sent a letter stating that it would be necessary for the mayor to return $196.32 back to the city.
According to the documents, Slaughter billed taxpayers $8 for breakfast on Jan. 20, but her trip did not begin until 11:30 a.m. The mayor then billed $20 for dinner on Jan. 23, when the trip ended at noon. The mayor also charged $55.32 to her room on Jan. 21 after she was already paid the meal allowance that day. Finally, the mayor billed $113 for mileage when she receives an auto allowance on her regular paychecks.
Slaughter wrote back to McCain that she wanted the city auditor to contact her directly.
Meanwhile, more information is coming out about her trip to Washington D. C. According to the rental car agreement in her brother-in-law, Ralph Slaughter's, name, someone did a lot of driving. When the car was checked out it had 793 miles on it. Three days later it had 2,000 miles on it when it was returned, a difference of 1,207 miles. That's about the same as driving from Baton Rouge to New Orleans 20 times.
News 2 spoke to numerous people in the Port Allen community who are not happy with Mayor Slaughter.
"It gives me the feeling she's hiding something," Albert Bordelon said. "If she had nothing to hide, why not talk to the public?"
Business owner Jason Hammack said Mayor Slaughter continues to be the daily talk at his cafe.
"I have heard from whites, blacks, both sides of the equation," Hammack said. "The general consensus is embarrassment and fatigue."
One woman in Port Allen did not want to be identified, but she also said the mayor owes taxpayers an explanation.
"Tell it like it is, how it was and what she did and why she did it," they said.
A council meeting is being held tonight. News 2 has a crew there and will have the latest on News 2 at ten.
