PORT ALLEN - Bar sales in West Baton Rouge are suffering after a new ordinance in East Baton Rouge took effect last week.

Bars are now open Sundays on the east side of the river, and bar owners in Port Allen say it's taking away their business.

"Just from the first Sunday, of opening up on the first Sunday, our sales went from $1,800 to $600," said Wilson Battley, who owns Ryderz Sports Bar in Port Allen.

Port Allen bar owners blame the Sunday hours, since they close at 10 p.m. and Baton Rouge closes at midnight. They also fear patrons no longer have a reason to cross the river.

"If it gets any worse, I just can't stay here," said Emanuel Perkins, the owner of the New Road Runner in Port Allen.

To change Sunday bar hours in Port Allen requires a vote from the public, but that could take up to six months.

"I can't wait six months, I can't wait another Sunday," said Battley.

Mayor Roger Bergeron says he's investigating the issue to find a solution which benefits everyone.
