Popular roadway to get speed limit increase
CENTRAL - Drivers on the Central Throughway will get a speed boost come beginning of the week.
On Monday, the speed limit along the throughway from Florida Blvd. to Greenwell Springs Rd. will increase from 50 to 55 mph.
"There's something nationally which is called the 85 percentile," Central Chief Administrative Officer David Barrow said. "That's what you want to set your speed limits on open roadways, the 85th percentile was much higher than the 50 miles an hour that was on this road now."
Barrow worked with the East Baton Rouge Public Works Traffic Engineering Division to run analysis on the roads possible speed limit.
Reports show 85 percent of drivers on the throughway already traveled between 55 and 60 miles an hour despite the 50 mph speed limit.
The maximum speed limit will cap off at 55.
State law says that in incorporated areas on a local road 55 mph is the maximum speed limit a road can be.
