ST. TAMMANY PARISH - A car accident along Interstate 12 claimed the life of a 17-year-old from Ponchatoula and injured her two passengers Monday night.
State troopers say Kristina Barnard died from injuries she suffered after her car struck a tree along the highway.
Investigators say Barnard was traveling westbound on I-12 when her car began drifting off the road. Barnard overcorrected, sending the car off the road.
Her two passengers, ages 16 and 18, were transported to local hospitals with moderate injuries.
Troopers say all three had on seatbelts when the accident happened.
Alcohol is not suspected to have caused the wreck, but toxicology results are pending.
Troopers say the incident is the third fatal crash they have worked in a four-day span and they are urging drivers to stay alert on the roadways.
