A body recovered Tuesday afternoon from the Mississippi River has been identified as a 31-year-old Ponchatoula man who authorities say jumped into the river Saturday night from a ship.

The St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff's Office says Adam Gonzales was a work-release inmate from Tangipahoa Parish whose shipmates say jumped overboard to avoid being returned to jail.

Preliminary autopsy results indicate Gonzales drowned.
