Policeman charged with manslaughter of unarmed man
NEW ORLEANS - A New Orleans policeman has been charged with manslaughter of an unarmed man killed by an officer who was searching his mother's house for marijuana.
An email from Orleans Parish District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro's office says a grand jury indicted Joshua Colclough on Thursday with manslaughter of 20-year-old Wendell Allen. Assistant District Attorney Chris Bowman says a judge issued an arrest warrant and set bond at $300,000.
Attorney Lionel Lon Burns says Allen's family is glad about the indictment. He says the family had expected Colclough to sign a plea agreement to negligent homicide on Wednesday, but he changed his mind at the last minute.
Allen was one of eight people, five of them children, in the house when police showed up with a search warrant March 7.
