Authorities in St. Martin Parish are searching for an accused killer who jumped off the roof of the parish jail this morning.

Deputies said 36-year-old Paul Collins Jr. and a second inmate, 33-year-old Wilbert John, were in the recreational area on the jail's roof when they overpowered a deputy and jumped.

Collins was able to escape the grounds, but John was seriously injured and was recaptured immediately. He is currently being treated at a local hospital for his injuries. The deputy they attacked is suffering from minor injuries.

Collins was in jail for charges that he raped and killed his estranged wife, Brandi Collins Batiste. She was shot to death in a field behind Cypress Garden Apartments in St. Martinville back in July.

John had been transferred to the parish jail from Angola Prison for a court appearance yesterday.

Deputies said Collins is 6'3" tall, weighs 200 pounds and is clean-shaven and bald.  He was last seen wearing his orange prison jumpsuit but may have removed it and have on a white T-shirt and gray sweatpants.

Collins is considered dangerous.  If you have any information about his location, you are urged to call 911 or the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office at 337-394-3071 immediately.
