A 35-year-old man in St. Martinville has shot and killed himself following a standoff with police that locked down a nearby elementary school.

Police said the man, whose name wasn't immediately released, was armed with a shotgun and held officers at bay for more than three hours Friday morning while he sat in a car parked outside the home of his estranged girlfriend's mother.

Detective Jeff Farmer said police were called to the home after the man had an argument with the girlfriend.

Farmer said the man didn't threaten officers with the gun before he shot himself.

His car was parked about 50 to 100 yards from The St. Martinville Early Leaning Center, where about 500 students and 40 staff members were kept inside until the standoff ended.
