PLAQUEMINE – Two people were shot in a neighborhood feud that escalated into an officer-involved shooting Tuesday evening.

Police responded to a report of shots fired on Osage Avenue, a few blocks from a murder Thursday. At the scene, police found someone shot and fired at a possible shooting suspect.

Police Chief Kenny Payne said the initial shooting victim motioned to officers that the person who shot him was across the street.  When officers went looking for the suspect, he pointed a gun at them.

"There may have been some type of on-going problem over the last few weeks," the chief said to reporters on the scene.

Names of the two people who were shot were not released.  Payne said, though, they were both taken to the hospital and should survive.

State Police will handle both the first shooting and officer-involved shooting investigations.  It is standard for troopers to handle investigations when an officer fires their weapon.

Payne confirmed that two officers responded to the call but only one fired a weapon.  The officer who fired the shot was placed on paid administrative leave.

This is the second shooting in a week in Plaquemine.  On Thanksgiving, Derick Askins, 32, was shot and killed. Police are looking for “Dusty” Gray in connection with the killing.

It does not appear that the shootings are related.
