UPDATE: Two St. Gabriel police officers surrendered to Louisiana State Police Thursday after investigators say they admitted stealing money from a man after he died in a car crash.
Keith Snowten and Rodrick Wesley are charged with theft and malfeasance in office.
The crash happened in August.
State Police say one of the officers took $2,000 from the victim's wallet and gave $1,000 in hush money to the other officer.
St. Gabriel police Chief Kevin Ambeau, Sr. notified State Police about the incident last month after receiving a tip from one of the officers' ex-girlfriends.
"To take money from a dead guy, it hits an all time low," Ambeau said. "The victim can't speak for himself, but I'm grateful for the witness who came forward and gave us the information."
