Police: MAP employee hit, killed by his vehicle
BATON ROUGE- Police released the details about a crash that killed a Motorist Assistance Patrol worker Monday.
Jim Gilmer, 68, was killed when his specialized state vehicle ran over him after it was rear-ended by a semi.
The crash happened Monday morning in a westbound lane on I-10 at the foot of the Horace Wilkinson Bridge, also called the "New Bridge."
Gilmer, operating his MAP truck, was stopped in the center lane to remove a piece of chain from the roadway. Police said the emergency lights were activated on the truck.
Gilmer walked to the front of the truck when an 18-wheeler hit the vehicle, pushing it into Gilmer.
The driver of the semi, Davie Coussore, 62, was ticketed for careless operation of a vehicle. Coussore is from Florida, according to police.
Gilmer was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the investigation is continuing, and more charges are possible.
