UPDATE: Police say the man shot and killed by an East Baton Rouge sheriff's deputy earlier this week was mentally unstable at the time of the shooting and had likely burglarized multiple nearby homes just moments before.

According to state police, 31-year-old Shermichael Ezeff was bleeding from the arm when he approached the 54-year-old deputy, Ronald Landry, Wednesday. Witness accounts given to police say Ezeff was admitted to a hospital for being in an "altered state of mind" two days earlier. They say he was released the next day and exhibited similar behavior when he got into an altercation with the deputy.

Police say DNA evidence also linked Ezeff to multiple home burglaries were also reported in the area just before he stumbled upon the deputy. Blood was found at the three different scenes that matched Ezeff's.

Ezeff was previously arrested for attempted second-degree murder in 2010 after he shot a man through the front door of his White Castle home. The victim told police Ezeff had knocked on his door asking for money. When he told him to go away, Ezeff allegedly tried to kick in the door and fired a shot, striking the victim in the arm. Ezeff fled from police but was eventually taken into custody.

Ronald Landry works with EBRSO's Judicial Process Division and has been a deputy for 23 years.

The investigation is ongoing. Check back for updates.

BATON ROUGE - State police are investigating after a man was shot and killed by an East Baton Rouge sheriff's deputy Wednesday.

Authorities say the incident occurred just after 4 p.m. in the 600 block of North Ardenwood Drive. According to the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office, a deputy was serving a temporary restraining order in the area when another person, covered in blood and claiming to have been stabbed, approached the officer. At some point, a struggle apparently broke out and that person was shot by the deputy.

The man was taken to an area hospital where he died later that same night. The sheriff's office says it is also unclear if he was actually stabbed before the shooting.

Louisiana State Police has taken over the investigation, as is protocol for all officer-involved shootings. The deputy was not injured and has been placed on administrative leave.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
