Police: man claims self-defense in fatal shooting
JACKSON - Jackson police say a 21-year-old man claims self-defense in a shooting that killed one man and hospitalized a bystander.
Police say Michael Fields of Jackson turned himself in Saturday afternoon, and has been booked with capital murder.
WLBT-TV reports that before he surrendered, Fields told the station that two strangers tried to rob him at gunpoint outside his apartment Friday night. He says that when they showed up there again on Saturday, he shot at them.
Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham Stewart says the dead man was was shot in the buttocks, groin, back and chest. She says he probably was in his late teens to mid-20's. His name was not available.
Police Officer Colendula Green says the bystander was shot in the chest, but is expected to survive.
