NEW ROADS - A Pointe Coupee Parish police juror says ordinances involving gunfire near homes need to be put in place.
Juror Albert Dukes, who lives outside New Roads, says he was startled by dove hunters in the field behind his home early Sunday morning. Dukes was concerned about the safety of people in his neighborhood, and called the sheriff's office. A deputy responded but told Dukes the hunters did not do anything wrong, because they had permission to be in the field.
Dukes says he wants the police jury to consider ordinances from other parishes, which may include putting distance limits for shooting near highways and homes. Dukes says he wants input from hunters and others to make sure any changes are fair.
The police juror says he expects that process to start by next month.
