BATON ROUGE – A man who was killed outside an Annette Street home Monday morning was previously turned in to police by his tough-loving mom.

According to Baton Rouge Police, 25-year-old Tevin Gunter was shot just after 6 a.m. Monday morning in the 5300 block of Annette Street. An East Baton Rouge Coroner pronounced him dead at the scene.

Police say there are no known suspects or motives at this time.

"The matter is still early and still under investigation," District Attorney Hillar Moore said. "This is an area that has been hit by several different shootings in the past."

Gunter celebrated his 25th birthday in jail after he was accused of robbing a Circle K on Florida Boulevard last year.  After investigators released surveillance video of the incident, his mother Tonia Kinchen called police to turn her son in.  Police say Gunter later admitted to stealing a carton of cigarettes, a bottle of liquor and $89 in cash from the register. He was released in November.

Kinchen, who spoke with WBRZ, said she had to help her son who was struggling with drug abuse and living on the street.

"Every time I heard a siren, is it him? Is the police going to knock on my door? Am I going to have to identify a body," Kinchen told WBRZ's Brittany Weiss.
