THIBODAUX - Police have announced warrants will be obtained in connection with a shooting that took place during the first parade of the Carnival season in Thibodaux on Sunday.

20-year-old Ryan Harris and 33-year-old Quincy Johnson, both of Napoleonville, were the two men involved in the shooting, according to Thibodaux Police.

The shooting happened on Sunday at around 3 p.m. near Jackson Street and Canal Boulevard just as several thousand parade attendees gathered at that location for the beginning of Mardi Gras festivities. Harris, who was found to be wearing a bullet proof vest and reportedly involved in a fight earlier during the day, approached Johnson and shot him in the chest.

Johnson returned fire, hitting Harris in the left side. No one else was injured despite the large concentration of people due to the parade.

Police said they recovered a pair of handguns on the scene that were later discovered to be stolen.

Thibodaux PD said Harris, who had fled the scene, was found about 150 yards from the site of the shooting. Johnson fell to the ground after he was shot, which is where officers found him.

Both men were taken to the Thibodaux Regional Medical Center for treatment. Both are listed in stable condition as of this time.

While some people in the area expressed fear and caution following the shooting, it didn’t stop thousands of people from lining up along Canal Boulevard to eat, listen to music and await the day’s second parade, Ambrosia.

Ambrosia was set to run immediately after Shaka but was delayed due to the shooting. Thibodaux Police rerouted the parade to cut across Canal Boulevard at Seventh Street, taking it away from its usual route that usually runs up Jackson Street.
