Police find 47-pound teen after arresting mother for drugs
BATON ROUGE - A police officer discovered a nightmare situation in Baton Rouge Wednesday when he said he found a 15-year-old child severely malnourished and covered in cockroaches after arresting the boy's mother for cocaine possession.
According to arrest records Baton Rouge Police charged 49-year-old Rose Holland with crack cocaine possession and cruelty to a juvenile. Police also charged her roommate, 54-year-old Cathy Fort, with cocaine possession.
BRPD said an officer responded to a loud music complaint at the pair's residence off N. 46th Street. When he arrived the officer said Holland and Fort were in a car out front, and he could hear loud music coming from inside the house. The officer said when he was looking in the car he spotted a glass crack pipe and cocaine in the floor board of the vehicle, and found more cocaine in a brown purse inside the car.
The officer said both women admitted the cocaine was for their use, and he detained both of them before going inside the house to check for more narcotics. When he got inside Holland's room the officer said he found Holland's 15-year-old son having a seizure on a cot. He said the teen was "very small" and "extremely malnourished," weighing only 47 pounds and covered in bug bites. When EMS arrived they said they found out the child was also stuck to the cot from lying in his own feces and urine for several days.
EMS rushed the child to the hospital, where police said he was in critical condition.
Holland and Fort were both booked into the parish jail.
Holland's relatives claim they contacted the state multiple times about the conditions her son was in. The Department of Children and Family Services told News 2's Investigative Unit they could not comment on any cases because of state law. Click HERE to read more.
