Police department mystery about missing items
SORRENTO - There's a mystery at the empty police station: what happened to department items that went missing?
Wednesday, one was returned. The Bushmaster M4 11.5 inch barrel assault rifle was left on the porch of the police chief's home.
"I opened the door to see what was going on and nobody was there and when I turned around to go back in my house, I spied the gun sitting on a bench I have next to my front door," Fern Barnett said.
A recent inventory discovered the gun, which was acquired in 2007, was no where to be found.
Barnett started calling former officers who had access to the gun and then around 9 p.m. Wednesday someone knocked on her door and scurried away before she could see them.
"I did not hear the vehicle ride up. I did not see the car. All I saw was the lights cause I was looking through my door window. I just saw lights and it drove off toward the front of my house, so I couldn't see it," she said.
The gun was turned over to the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office.
The department was also missing a few flash bangs but Barnett believes those were used but just not properly documented.
Barnett does not plan to find out who brought the mystery delivery to her house.
The Sorrento Police department lost its funding last year and voters decided to disband the agency.
Barnett plans to step down from her position in March.
