Police chief's son posts bail following double homicide
PLAQUEMINE- The son of St. Gabriel Police Chief Kevin Ambeau posted a $20,000 bail Wednesday and walked out of the Iberville Parish jail.
Investigators said, Ambeau Junior shot and killed two men on Mother's Day following a fight. Rove Lodge and Dominique Dunbar both died after the shooting. Wednesday, Kevin Ambeau Junior was arrested on an unrelated charge, after investigators discovered a stolen firearm inside his residence.
"During our investigation, we learend Kevin Ambeau Jr. purchased the gun from someone in the neighborhood and ti was possibly stolen," Iberville Parish Sheriff Brett Stassi said. "We got background and learned it was. We got a warrant for possession of a stolen firearm."
Ambeau Junior didn't utter a word as he walked to a waiting car. The driver of the vehicle appeared agitated that WBRZ cameras were at the jail filming as he walked out.
Today, Chief Kevin Ambeau in St. Gabriel lifted his silence and defended his son.
"It's unfortunate that they lost their life," Ambeau said. "When you bring a fight to someone else's home, anything can happen. I knew both of those kids, knew the mom and ti's unfortunate that happened."
WBRZ spoke to Chief Ambeau at the jail near a sallyport, moments before his son was released through the front entrance.
"He was in his own home," Ambeau said." You can have a lot of Monday morning quarterbacking, but if someone comes to my house at 11:30pm fighting me and had a gun, I'd do the same thing my son did."
Sheriff Stassi said once the investigation is complete all of the findings will be turned over to a grand jury. Those jurors will ultimately decide whether Ambeau Junior faces any charges for allegedly killing two people.
Meanwhile, the arrest for the possession of a stolen firearm is considered a felony.
"If my son violated the law, I want the justice system to handle my son, and that's how it is," Chief Ambeau said. "There's no favoritism here."
