Port Allen Police Chief Fred Smith confirmed to News 2 that his son, Trent Smith, died in a crash overnight in Baton Rouge. The crash happened early Sunday morning at a gas station in the 1300 block of Florida Street.

Investigators say the car left the roadway, smashed into a pole and knocked the gas pump down causing a massive fire. The Baton Rouge Fire Department put out the blaze.

Trent was taken to the hospital where he died.

Chief Smith told News 2 his 18-year-old son was getting ready to graduate from Belaire High School in Baton Rouge and planned to join the military.

Investigators have not determined what caused the crash.
