GONZALES – A Prairieville man is in critical condition after being hit by a vehicle in Gonzales last night, according to city police.

44-year-old Demaric Carter was hit by a pickup while crossing Airline Highway just after 7 p.m. last night, and flown to a Baton Rouge hospital.

Investigators say Carter was wearing camouflaged or dark clothing, and the vehicle’s driver claimed because of his clothes and the poor lighting in the area he didn’t see Carter until it was too late.

Police say it was evident the driver tried to take evasive action, and that he was not impaired by alcohol.  Carter’s blood is also being tested for alcohol levels as part of the investigation.
