BATON ROUGE - A babysitter is in jail after police said she left a 16-month-old alone for hours.

The sitter, 26-year-old Shareese Renee Joseph, faces child desertion and drug charges. Her boyfriend, Will Chatman also faces drug charges.

Police were called to the apartment around 5 p.m. Tuesday evening, where they say the child was found in a container, crying and sitting in a soiled diaper.

The infant's grandmother was on her way to visit some friends when she saw Joseph and her boyfriend walking down Scenic Hwy, 15 blocks from her apartment. The grandmother drove to the apartment, where she knew her grandson was staying. She heard cries from her grandson and left to get the manager to unlock the door.

"She was paid money to watch after the child, the child was left in her care around 8 o'clock that morning." said Cpl. L'Jean McKneely. "For some odd reason, she left with her boyfriend."

While searching the apartment, police found remnants of marijuana cigarettes.
