BATON ROUGE - The Magnolia State Peace Officers Association of Louisiana released a statement today supporting Dewayne White, who was recently removed from his position as Baton Rouge Police chief.

The MSPOA said White had made "obvious efforts" to address concerns with crime, and they support him on a number of issues.

White is on paid administrative leave after Mayor Kip Holden told him last week he was recommending White be fired. Holden told News 2 today that the Peace Officers Association didn't have all the facts.

"Being there every day you see things that some of the organizations don't see," he said. "I have responsibility to make the best call I can. I respect the organization, but the organization can't be mayor and be police officers at the same time when they don't know all the facts."

Holden released a letter last night detailing 14 points he said gave him cause to fire White, who told the media through his attorney last week the termination came because of politics involving the police union.

White is scheduled to appeal the decision at a Feb. 18 hearing with Holden, who said the meeting would be public at White's request.

News 2's Mike Steele will have more on the situation tonight at 5 p.m.
