NEW ROADS - Pointe Coupee Parish residents will be paying more money for garbage collection services after the Police Jury voted 6-4 to increase the monthly rate from $13 to $14.50 per
household.

The higher garbage rate will help offset a 4 percent annual increase in the parish's garbage collection contract with SWeeDee, a solid waste disposal company based in Houma.

Parish Administrator Jim Bello said on Tuesday the parish currently pays $3.20 monthly, per user out of its Solid Waste Fund to keep prices lower for residents.

Supplementing fees amounts to $378,555 annually for the parish. Bello said an adjustment of $1.50 per user would generate $177,354 annually.
