Plans for new home for Amite police going ahead
AMITE - Plans for a new home for the Amite Police Department are moving forward.
Mayor Buddy Bel says the town was waiting to see if the half-cent jail tax would pass before moving ahead on the renovation of an old state office building.
Chief Jerry Trabona tells The Daily Star that town officials were meeting with architects about the plans.
The next step would be to put everything out for bids.
The major project on the building would be the installation of the jail.
The Amite Police Department's current jail has capacity for 12 inmates. Trabona said he would like to expand that to 24 if possible.
