PORT FOURCHON - Federal officials say they have approved plans to seal a gas well that began leaking Monday in the Gulf of Mexico about 75 miles southwest of Port Fourchon on the southeast Louisiana coast.

Eileen Angelico, spokeswoman for the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement, says drilling fluid will be pumped into the well Thursday to seal the leak.

The well is at a production platform owned by a subsidiary of Houston-based Talos Energy.

Company officials say it had been out of production for years and was being permanently plugged when it began leaking small amounts of gas and an oil-water mixture called condensate.

The Coast Guard says a small sheen was visible on the Gulf surface but company officials say it is expected to evaporate.
