BATON ROUGE - Sheriff's deputies said a pizza delivery driver told them he was too busy with his phone to realize he hit someone with his truck last week, and charged him with negligent homicide.
Investigators said Darius Shaw, 18, was making a delivery on Tiger Bend Road Aug. 16 when he hit Pamela Walton, 57. Deputies said Shaw told them he was looking at his phone's GPS when the collision happened, and thought he hit a mailbox or some other debris in the road.
They said Shaw was worried his manager would get mad at him for not making his deliveries, so he finished those before returning to the scene and finding out he'd hit Walton.
EMS took Walton to the hospital where she later died from her injuries.
Deputies booked Shaw into the parish jail Thursday on suspicion of hit and run as well as negligent homicide.
