Pirates entertaining Reds in Pittsburgh
PITTSBURGH - Fresh off a season-ending series in which the Pirates won three straight from the Reds in Cincinnati to clinch the top wild card seed in the National League, the two clubs are set to square off again tonight in the wild card game in Pittsburgh.
In short, the winner advances in the playoffs while the loser goes home.
Getting the ball for the Pirates will be 16-game winner Francisco Liriano. He finished his first season with the Pirates with a 16-8 record and an earned run average of 3.02. He had 163 strikeouts. On the mound for the reeling Reds is Johnny Cueto, who gets the start because Mat Latos is injured. Cueto was 5-2 this season with a 2.82 ERA. In two previous starts this season in Pittsburgh, Cueto allowed just one run and three hits.
It's believed the Reds will have All-Star second baseman Brandon Phillips in the lineup. He left Saturday's game with a leg injury.
The American League wild card game is tomorrow night in Cleveland as the Indians play host to Tampa Bay, 5-2 winners last night over Texas in the wild card play-in game.
