Pilot dead in helicopter crash
NEW ORLEANS - The pilot of a helicopter which crashed after lifting off from a Gulf production platform died in the incident, according to the company which operates the platform.
Bobbie Ireland, Director of Corporate Communications Americas for Woodgroup, said the contracted helicopter was picking up three Woodgroup employees when it crashed after takeoff around 7:24 a.m.
A Coast Guard spokesperson said an offshore supply vessel retrieved them. A Coast Guard helicopter took one person with a possible back injury to the hospital, and Acadian Air transported the other three.
Ireland said all three employees were taken to the LSU Trauma Center in New Orleans. Two employees were injured, while the third was not.
"Woodgroup is providing our men and their families all the support possible. Our thoughts and prayers are with them, their families, and the family of the pilot during this very difficult time," Ireland said.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
