WALKER - A smelly situation has a community in Livingston Parish complaining. But, it's the inability to get through on the Department of Environmental Quality complaint line that worsened the situation.

"It went straight to voice-mail," said resident Wayne Breaud. "And after the voice-mail it said that the voice-mail was full. And you know in my opinion, how does a state agency treat us like that?"

Over the weekend, the system would not allow people to leave a message. Breaud said he was trying to report foul odors coming from a landfill near his home, but wasn't able to leave his message.

"I'm not sure what was wrong with the phone lines when these calls came in," DEQ spokesperson Rodney Mallet said.

"However, we received 6 voice messages on the hotline over the weekend. The phone appeared to be working properly for those callers. When we checked the mailbox today, it was not full. If this was an emergency situation, citizens should call their local 911 responders."
