Pedestrian killed in crash on LA 1 near Plaquemine
PLAQUEMINE - State Police are investigating a crash that left a pedestrian dead on LA 1 north of LA 992-3 near Plaquemine early Tuesday morning.
66-year-old Gene Ellis, of Plaquemine, was killed as he attempted to cross LA 1 from the east side of the roadway. 31-year-old Jeremy Gulotta, also of Plaquemine, was traveling southbound on LA 1 in an SUV when his front bumper struck the pedestrian.
Ellis was pronounced dead on the scene from injuries sustained during the crash by the Iberville Parish Coroner's Office, according to State Police.
Troopers say impairment is a factor on the part of Ellis, and a toxicology sample was taken from him to be sent to the LSP Crime Lab for further analysis. Gulotta was wearing a seat belt and was not injured in the crash. He was given a breath test for intoxication which registered no detectable signs of impairment.
