WALKER - Walker police say a pedestrian remains in critical condition Tuesday after being hit by an SUV on the Interstate 12 east exit ramp at South Satsuma Road.

Capt. John Sharp says 27-year-old Chad Wayne Cox, of Covington, was walking in the left lane of the ramp around 3:30 a.m. when he was struck by an SUV driven by 37-year-old Steven Michael Jones, of Baton Rouge.

Jones told police he was driving in the left lane behind an 18-wheeler when the 18-wheeler suddenly swerved to dodge Cox.

Sharp says Jones tried to swerve but was unable to avoid Cox.

Police believe weather and poor lighting were factors in the accident.

Sharp says police are still trying to determine why Cox was walking on the interstate.
